The best bookstores in KL

E-books may be taking over the world, but brick-and-mortar bookstores will always be special because you can never replace the joy of a paperback in your backpack. Live vicariously through your favourite characters at these best bookstores in the city.

Cite Book Garden

Cite (magazine publisher, champion of local and Singaporean writers, and the biggest Chinese online bookstore in the country) opened a physical bookstore in the form of Cite Book Garden, a small store designed for bibliophiles to relax and browse at length. The book garden features actual plants by way of hanging potted ferns by the window, a few chairs where readers can sit and read, a wall displaying the magazines they publish (ranging from fashion glossies like Vivi to the Chinese edition of National Geographic), a wide selection of titles from Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China, and even a small café (they once offered coffee workshops partnering with Exhibit Café from TTDI). The second floor houses an event space for readings, talks, activities for kids, and more.

Posisi Seks Yang Anda Inginkan??

Najib Razak

5 fabulous natural places to visit in East Malaysia

Much of East Malaysia on the island of Borneo was once covered by natural vegetation like lowland rainforest, montane forests at high altitudes, and mangroves along the coasts. Many natural areas still remain today, and most are reasonably accessible, but in some cases do require long road or river journeys.

Here are five fabulous natural places to put on your list of East Malaysian travel destinations.

1. Bako National Park, Sarawak

One of Sarawak’s smallest national parks (just 2,727ha) punches way above its weight class in terms of wildlife. Located 37km from the Sarawak capital of Kuching, Bako supports stands of most plant communities found in the state with mixed dipterocarp forest, mangrove forest (where it’s possible to see Proboscis Monkeys), grasslands, peat swamp forest, and a very unusual kerangas, or heath forest, where pitcher plants thrive in the nutrient-depleted soil.

There are a dozen trails to walk, from a few hundred metres to several kilometres in length and overnighting in basic park accommodations is an option, though most visitors return to Kuching and stay in hotels such as the Pullman Kuching.

Kuching Waterfront: Bazaar far from bizarre

East Malaysia, on the island of Borneo, has many appealing qualities and the Sarawak capital of Kuching offers a relaxed and yet, vibrant setting. The riverfront district along the Sarawak River, in downtown Kuching, is now an open space used mostly for recreation. It’s a lively pedestrian-only precinct that is frequented by the locals who use it for leisure activities, to enjoy a sunset drink, or have a meal beneath shady trees.

A fascinating part of this riverfront area is the street named Main Bazaar which runs alongside the river. Retail shops, bazaars, and a few dining outlets front the street but there are numerous uniquely Sarawakian and Bornean products sold in the shops here to ensure that the bazaars are a bit more bizarre than mainstream.

The former trading houses, or go-downs, along Jalan Main Bazaar offer an intriguing insight to the area’s historic activities before it became a major tourism precinct. With awnings providing shade, it’s easy to amble along here, and the best place to start your walk is at the former Court House which has recently been converted to an amazing lifestyle concept under the ChinaHouse banner.

What were once go-downs for goods unloaded at the riverside docks are now mostly craft and souvenir shops selling items from Borneo. These old shops with captivating names present a face of a bygone era – names such as Dayak Art, Sarawak Steamship Berhad, and Haiyen Bird’s Nest offer some intrigue before you even step inside.

Things Kids Of Today Won’t Understand

Today’s Kid Won’t Understand

Being a kid born prior to the millennium, I’ve had my fair share of VCR tapes, floppy disks and Beverly Hills 90210. Kids today are connected on their smartphones and tablets that they simply don’t understand the struggles of having to call on someone and see if they could come out and play after dinner.

While we were watching Saturday morning cartoons and gobbling down fruit loops, kids are now watching Keeping Up With The Kardasians while shopping online. While every generation has their perks, here are some things that children of today will never understand.

Dial-Up Internet

Waiting for someone to put down the phone so that you could finally dial-up to the Internet was such a home drama. Yelling and arguments broke out so often that mum and dad had to step in. The result: nobody could use the phone at all. The nerve…

Smoking vs Vaping : How Much Is It Really Costing You

The recent price hike for cigarettes have caused an uproar among the smokers in Malaysia with some brands going up as high as RM18 per box. On the other hand, a recent crackdown on vape juices (e-liquids) with nicotine by the Health Ministry has also caused outrage amongst vape store owners who have had their stocks confiscated by Health Ministry officers.

It was reported that in Selangor alone, over 300 vape stores were raided in the beginning of November. Under the Poisons Act 1952, the sale of nicotine can only be undertaken by licensed pharmacists and registered medical practitioners, and is prohibited by other parties. Similarly, under the existing legislation, the sale of e-liquids with nicotine can also only be supplied by registered medical practitioners and licensed pharmacists. However, pharmacists are saying they are not keen on selling vape juices. There have also been calls for vape to be regulated as well as for it to be taxed. The government has announced that it will set up a special committee to look into vaping. It is also interesting to note that the vape industry in Malaysia is worth half a billion ringgit and is the second largest in the world after the American market.

Facts You Need to Know About Your Blood Pressure

Simply put, your blood pressure is the force that the blood makes against the walls of your blood vessels each time your heart pumps. It is important to know what your blood pressure is. This allows you to determine whether it is within the normal range or not, allowing you to spring into action in case it is high. Having high blood pressure puts you at risk of heart attack, stroke and many other health problems.

Measuring your blood pressure on a regular basis is important. Aside from having it done at a doctor’s office, it may also be performed at home. Such is carried out with the help of a blood pressure meter or sphygmomanometer. Aside from something that features a mechanical or mercury manometer, there’s also a wrist blood pressure monitor available these days for easy taking of your blood pressure. However, this device is very sensitive to your body position, potentially causing an inaccurate reading or result.

Benefits of Antioxidants

Antioxidants come up frequently in discussions about good health and preventing diseases. These powerful substances, which mostly come from the fresh fruits and vegetables we eat, prohibit (and in some cases even prevent), the oxidation of other molecules in the body. The benefits of antioxidants are very important to good health, because if free radicals are left unchallenged, they can cause a wide range of illnesses and chronic diseases.

Antioxidants and Free Radicals

The human body naturally produces free radicals and the antioxidants to counteract their damaging effects. However, in most cases, free radicals far outnumber the naturally occurring antioxidants. In order to maintain the balance, a continual supply of external sources of antioxidants is necessary in order to obtain the maximum benefits of antioxidants. Antioxidants benefit the body by neutralizing and removing the free radicals from the bloodstream.

The Hacker Search Engine “Shodan” is the Scariest Search Engine on Internet

Launched in 2009, Shodan is more of a prying eye across the world through the IoT rather than just a simple search engine. John Matherly, its creator, named his project after the villainous computer in the video game System Shock. As in present, Shodan is living up to his name. Already designated as ‘world’s scariest search engine’, it is commonly called the hacker search engine.

Shodan shows you what Google doesn’t. Designed with an aim to link all the devices connected to the Internet, it took no time to become a play zone for hackers and experimenters. Shodan works by collecting and stacking HTTP addresses from various devices linked over the Internet across the world. The indexing is done on the basis such as country, OS and brand.

Zaid Ibrahim On Tun Dr Mahathir

The following is the transcript of Zaid Ibrahim's speech given at the Royal Selangor Club luncheon. It is also on Zaid's Blog here:

Thank you, Mr President, for allowing me the opportunity to speak to members of the Royal Selangor Club about what lies ahead for the country. I was once a member of this special Club. I have fond memories of the Long Bar as a special meeting place for lawyers and businessmen, where good spirits and conversation could always be found.

Today we have a Prime Minister who is not only embroiled in a financial scandal the magnitude of which the world has not seen before – he has also deliberately obstructed the machinery of Government from carrying out its duties.

The Government of Malaysia is today run by Prime Minister Najib Razak’s lackeys, and he himself has become dangerous as a leader of this nation.

Fraser’s Hill : A Cool and Calming Getaway

Though overshadowed by the more popular and developed Cameron Highlands Hill Station, Fraser’s Hill quietly beckons, offering those in seek of solace a cool and calming getaway, just a short drive from Malaysia’s chaotic capital.

In this day and age, when travellers want to cram in as much as possible within as short a time as possible, it’s comforting to actually find places where there is very little to do. Many of us enjoy weekend escapes because of some attraction or activity, but Fraser’s Hill (Bukit Fraser) appeals mostly because it is a destination to simply kick back, relax, and enjoy the cool mountain air.

However, on closer inspection, there are actually many activities here ranging from jungle trekking to birdwatching, but if you are simply seeking a place where you can put your feet up and read a book then Fraser’s Hill is perfect.Visitors can walk in comfort in the cool air around the rarely used roads to admire gardens and colonial
bungalows, many of which are now retained by large Malaysian corporations. Because it is not hot and humid, Fraser’s Hill is a good place for physical activity such as hiking, playing golf on the nine-hole public course, tennis, cycling and horse riding. The circuitous road from Kuala Kubu Bharu to the summit is very popular with cyclists who cycle from the bottom to the top to develop strength and stamina.

Those masked men among us

Pretentious people with masks are all around us. Can we not see them? Or do we choose not to?

Lately there are so many people masking themselves, pretending to be who they are not.

Did you hear about the lady in Algeria who was sued by her husband because she wasn’t who she pretended to be? The husband thought he had married a beautiful, gorgeous woman but once those inches of foundation and make-up came off, he got a fright looking at what was left of her.

If you remember, there was also a case of a man in China who sued his wife for failing to disclose that she had undergone a series of plastic surgeries prior to marriage. He claimed to have fathered three ‘ugly’ children due to his wife’s ‘cheating’ .
