The best bookstores in KL

E-books may be taking over the world, but brick-and-mortar bookstores will always be special because you can never replace the joy of a paperback in your backpack. Live vicariously through your favourite characters at these best bookstores in the city.

Cite Book Garden

Cite (magazine publisher, champion of local and Singaporean writers, and the biggest Chinese online bookstore in the country) opened a physical bookstore in the form of Cite Book Garden, a small store designed for bibliophiles to relax and browse at length. The book garden features actual plants by way of hanging potted ferns by the window, a few chairs where readers can sit and read, a wall displaying the magazines they publish (ranging from fashion glossies like Vivi to the Chinese edition of National Geographic), a wide selection of titles from Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China, and even a small café (they once offered coffee workshops partnering with Exhibit Café from TTDI). The second floor houses an event space for readings, talks, activities for kids, and more.

Facts You Need to Know About Your Blood Pressure

Simply put, your blood pressure is the force that the blood makes against the walls of your blood vessels each time your heart pumps. It is important to know what your blood pressure is. This allows you to determine whether it is within the normal range or not, allowing you to spring into action in case it is high. Having high blood pressure puts you at risk of heart attack, stroke and many other health problems.

Measuring your blood pressure on a regular basis is important. Aside from having it done at a doctor’s office, it may also be performed at home. Such is carried out with the help of a blood pressure meter or sphygmomanometer. Aside from something that features a mechanical or mercury manometer, there’s also a wrist blood pressure monitor available these days for easy taking of your blood pressure. However, this device is very sensitive to your body position, potentially causing an inaccurate reading or result.

Zaid Ibrahim On Tun Dr Mahathir

The following is the transcript of Zaid Ibrahim's speech given at the Royal Selangor Club luncheon. It is also on Zaid's Blog here:

Thank you, Mr President, for allowing me the opportunity to speak to members of the Royal Selangor Club about what lies ahead for the country. I was once a member of this special Club. I have fond memories of the Long Bar as a special meeting place for lawyers and businessmen, where good spirits and conversation could always be found.

Today we have a Prime Minister who is not only embroiled in a financial scandal the magnitude of which the world has not seen before – he has also deliberately obstructed the machinery of Government from carrying out its duties.

The Government of Malaysia is today run by Prime Minister Najib Razak’s lackeys, and he himself has become dangerous as a leader of this nation.

What is your price?

Everyone does indeed have a price and it doesn’t always involve money.

If you are asked to eat a live cockroach in exchange for 2 tickets to watch Manchester United at Old Trafford, all expenses paid – would you do it? How about spending six months in total isolation in return for a luxury condo in Mont Kiara? What about cutting off your thumb for a good sum of money?

Would you do it?

What about killing a puppy? What about approving a faulty bridge? What about granting a project to a lousy contractor? What about voting for a crook? What about supporting a corrupt leader?

The question is what is your price?

10 Currencies That May Follow Tenge in Tumble Triggered by China

On most days, Kazakhstan finds itself in the backwaters of financial markets. Yet, it’s this central Asian nation that has delivered the latest shock to global currency trading.

Thursday’s 22 percent plunge in the tenge after Kazakhstan abandoned control of its exchange rate revealed a sense of urgency among policy makers: they had tried a managed depreciation just a day earlier. The escalation signaled to investors that it has become too costly for developing nations to defend their currencies. Vietnam also devalued the dong, while freely traded currencies such the South African rand and Turkey’s lira extended losses.

Countries with economic ties to China and Russia are exposed

The trigger for the wave of depreciations was China’s decision to weaken the yuan on Aug. 11, leaving countries competing with the world’s second-largest economy in export markets and those selling goods to it at a disadvantage. That added to the woes ofemerging markets already reeling from a looming increase in U.S. interest rates and weakness in oil prices. Some, like the countries of the former Soviet Union, face an additional problem: the ruble’s continued weakness puts them in an unfavorable position in their trade with Russia.

Zeti’s fight is our fight too

Her quest for the truth may have been stymied by interested parties, and it is our burden to continue the fight.

Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Zeti Akhtar Abdul Aziz has become something of a hero among Malaysians of late. Following revelations from several prominent bloggers that Zeti may have been one of the key players in a coup to remove the increasingly unpopular Najib Razak, she has become a martyr even as she fends off calls from pro-Najib quarters to resign before her term as governor ends in April next year.

The BNM Governor recently returned to Malaysia from a trip to the US and promptly gave an assessment of our economic outlook, but political observers will perhaps be more curious about Zeti’s claim that the central bank began informal investigations into 1MDB several years ago. In her own words, ““We did informal investigations with them for a few years actually, and we wrote reports and submitted the reports.”

DAP predicts political fund meet will be axed

DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang thinks the national consultative committee on political funding will suffer the fate of the Special Task Force

DAP elder statesman Lim Kit Siang believes that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s National Consultative Committee on Political Funding was nothing but a cynical ploy to buy time for a whole year to continue to avoid and evade the principles of accountability, transparency, integrity and good governance on the twin scandals of the RM42 billion 1MDB loans and RM2.6 billion in Najib’s personal accounts. “Najib has said that there are currently no laws regulating political funding or donations and thus the public can’t pass judgment yet.”

“This is a shocking example of Najib’s warped perceptions of what is right and what is wrong – a Prime Minister who has completely lost his moral authority and compass and ceased to distinguish between right from wrong.”

Which VPN Services Take Your Anonymity Seriously?

VPN services have become an important tool to counter the growing threat of Internet surveillance, but unfortunately not all VPNs are as anonymous as one might hope. In fact, some VPN services log users' IP-addresses and other private info for months. To find out how anonymous VPNs really are, Absolute Misdemeanor asked the leading providers about their logging practices and other privacy sensitive policies.

By now most Internet users are well aware of the fact that pretty much every step they take on the Internet is logged or monitored.

To prevent their IP-addresses from being visible to the rest of the Internet, millions of people have signed up to a VPN service. Using a VPN allows users to use the Internet anonymously and prevent snooping.

Unfortunately, not all VPN services are as anonymous as they claim, as several incidents have shown in the past.

By popular demand we now present the fourth iteration of our VPN services “logging” review. In addition to questions about logging practices, we also asked VPN providers about other privacy sensitive policies, so prospective users can make an informed decision.

1. Do you keep ANY logs which would allow you to match an IP-address and a time stamp to a user of your service? If so, exactly what information do you hold and for how long?

2. Under what jurisdiction(s) does your company operate?

3. What tools are used to monitor and mitigate abuse of your service?

4. Do you use any external email providers (e.g. Google Apps) or support tools ( e.g Live support, Zendesk) that hold information provided by users?
