Lower cost uberX now in KL, cars include Nissan Almera & Perodua Myvi

Uber, the US based technology company that provides consumers with an on-demand, private and luxury car service via smartphone apps has now launched its lower cost uberX service in KL, Malaysia.


The new uberX cost almost the same as metered budget Taxi in Malaysia and sometimes even cheaper between midnight till 6am.

Minimum Fare: RM2.50 
Base fare: RM1.50 
RM0.20 per minute + RM0.55 Per kilometer 

In comparison, a budget taxi in KL has the following meter chargers: RM3.00 base fare, RM0.87/KM (0.10 / 115m) and RM0.10/21 sec. There is also a 50% surcharge between 12am till 6am.

There are no official announcement regarding uberX in Malaysia yet. At the moment, there are only two types of uberX cars that are believed to be available, Nissan Almera & Perodua Myvi. Our sources revealed that most of the uberX cars are Nissan Almera and there are at least some 15-20 cars on the road.

Apart from uberX, Uber also operates the more premium UberBlack service in KL and very limited areas in Selangor. For the time being, UberBlack is 20% cheaper till the end of July. The normal rates of UberBlack are: 

    Minimum Fare: RM5 
    Base Fare: RM2.00 
    RM0.30 per minute + RM0.65 Per kilometer 

It is believed that the fare for uberX is currently discounted by 25% making it about 40% cheaper than Taxi.

Uber was officially launched in Malaysia in mid January 2014. Uber offers an alternative to consumers in getting around the city without the frustration of driving or waiting, by offering a premium transportation service with minimum waiting time and at reasonable cost. At the moment, some of the luxury vehicles used in Klang Valley include Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Teana and Mercedes E-class.
